I'm jamming this little nibbit inappropriately into the dead non-updated version of my ol' Blog. Isn't that nice? Surely many will consider it a great service to various people such as the select few who pray to God for an update here.

Anyway, this goofily rushed blog post is for entering to win a NWC, as you can see
Now, why do I think I should win one?
Well, the answer is to find an answer - not to that, but to some technical things about my Famicom setup. Yep. Famicom.

Now, I have a Famicom. And I recall reading on ol' www.retrousb.com that their repro carts wouldn't work on a Famicom due to the built-in 2P controller lacking a start button.
However, what isn't answered is - what if I have a third-party controller? Y'see, I got this;

Now, has anyone tested to see if the 2P Start button here would get the thing to run? Does anyone really care? Well, I apparently do. Why else would I enter this contest?

Oh, and if you're gonna ask why I don't just buy the repro cart? I'm just that cheap.

BS Zelda ROM hacks update.

Please excuse me for posting here -after- I announced moving plans, but I figured I'd put this up to make sure everyone knows.

Obviously I plug here often.
Now, though, I'd like to say that somewhere between the Music Hack and the Save Menu hack, the Sekiban ROMs can now boot on my ROM copier - real hardware compatibility ahoy!

I assume most of you folks who are used to playing these on emulators anyway won't find this too exciting, but a nerd like me just loves it when he can pop his favorite ROM hack on the actual system. I could rant more about this, but this is not the place.

I'm planning to have the blog moved to a new space and domain by the 20th, the blog's first birthday.

I have a few reasons for this - first off, my sloppiness is starting to get more and more apparent as I've updated this blog. I'm hoping moving things around will also help me reorganize the content.

The second issue I got is webspace - I'll need more of it, as lately I've been struggling to clean my old webspace out due to how much content I have. (Or at least, how large the content is.)

I hope to have most of the old content moved (Nothing that has been rendered obsolete, though.)
Stay tuned for any more tidbits.

Looking more into St. Giga.

As a Satellaview researcher I've wondered about the nature of St. Giga - and how they got involved in an ambitous Nintendo project - for a while. Even as I've looked up Satellaview content, I've also looked into researching St. Giga as a whole.

For a while I've tried entering search terms with their title on NicoNicoDouga - and recently I've been getting results. You can check some of them after the snip.

More importantly though, the English Wikipedia has been doing articles based on translations of the Japanese Wikipedia.
I'd like to thank anyone who helped on that. :)
It's very helpful, and it gives me context into some of my search results, too.

Whether it be the experimental New-Age music, or the just-as-experimental yet radically different Satellaview, St. Giga's history was innovation in the music business - which may have been why Nintendo sought them out for this project.

Apparently Nintendo invested stock in them in 93? Funny, wasn't that around the year the Super Famicom CD projects fell under?

I'd like to give thanks to Serenes Forest once again for the heads-up that inspired this update.

Nintendo has been putting up audio snippets of their Fire Emblem games on their site.

You might ask, "What's so special about that?"

Well, check out that last Monsho song - "WIND". It's a BS Fire Emblem-exclusive song (Apparently the song called "WIND" which was used in the Thracia albums is not the same...? BS F-Zero was confusing enough!)

This is the closest Nintendo has gone yet to re-release anything Satellaview-related since the add-on device's demise in mid-2000.

For ease of the English speaker, I've pulled said MP3 from their site and put it up on my blog. (actually I did it more for my collection - the uploading's just me being nice. But aw, well!)

If you guys see my links portion start to grow soon, it's because I've been looking around again.

Lately it seems like the international attention on the Satellaview has been growing - in a particularly sweet finding, The English Wikipedia article on the Satellaview has developed from being poo to actually being a very good starting base for research.

And now I finally have a grasp on how well the Satellaview did. It has SLIGHTLY more fans than the PC-FX! Whoopeee!... Wait, that means I need to do some PC-FX work if I still plan to be niche! Don't worry, Rising Stuff, the Battle Heat guide will be done soon!

Also of note is this recent article. I've never seen this guy's blog before, but he seems pretty excited, so I'm gonna be sure to check it out more. :D

This article also seems interesting - although I will note that on Kameb's Satellaview History Museum, the schedule seems to actually go from Noon to 2AM. Can anyone here clear this up? I also don't know much on whether the Satellaview could upload, and... arg, BS F-Zero still confuses me.

Satellaview dojin projects?

The Satellaview seems to still have a cult following in Japan even today. Fan demand for a remake of BS Fire Emblem: Akanea Senki Hen was enough for Intsys to actually have a comment about it - an awesome change from the usual Nintendo practice of pretending they don't know what we're talking about. (Unfortunately serensforest is down. I can't find the link. D: )

But while Intsys is considering such an action, fans are already taking it. Ah, it's always grand to see fans go above and beyond!

First let me start with something I found a while ago - this file right here.
What is it? Seems like a retelling of BS Fire Emblem, done in SRPG Maker 95. There's apparently also a patch for this, while I have been unable to locate. (This only works properly if your Windows is set to run in Japanese OS mode.)
I've played a bit of it, and was kinda irked at how unlike the actual game this is, but I was still shocked, as this was the first of it's kind I noted.

Then a recent NicoNicoDouga upload threw me for a loop.

On the proper naming of certain game titles.

The reason for the lack of updates is due to slow developments.
The reason for -this- update is also due to slow developments. This is a small little rant about the naming conventions of key Satellaview titles - how a few of these have confusing titles, and a few had been mis-named for a while due to to the emulation scene not having quite fact-checked.

On "Kodai no Sekiban", "Kodai no Ishiiban", and "Inishie no Sekiban"

The proper title of this specific BS Zelda is apparently a ridiculously confusing play on words that is difficult to properly romanize because how you -read- the title is not the same as how you pronounce it. Here's a few quotes from the BS Zelda forums to help with this.

"Going back to something a bit earlier, I've looked into matters with the Inishie no Sekiban vs Kodai no Sekiban issue. From what I gather, "Kodai" and "Inishie" are synonyms meaning "ancient."

Apparently just as Ishi (石) and Ban (盤) together counterintuitively make Sekiban (石盤), Ko (古) alone can be counterintuitively pronounced "Inishie". This is why the recent PS3 RPG, "白騎士物語 -古の鼓動-", translates to "Shirokishi Monogatari -Inishie no Kodō-" or "White Knight Story -Ancient Heartbeat-" instead of "Shirokishi Monogatari -Ko no Kodō-".

So even thought "古の鼓動" literally breaks down to:
古 - Ko
の - No
鼓 - Tsudumi
動 - Dou
when taken together it becomes Inishie (古) no (の) Kodō (鼓動).

What this means is that "Inishie no Sekiban" (BSゼルダの伝説古の石盤) seems to have been an alternate name for "Kodai no Sekiban" (BSゼルダの伝説古代の石盤). The only difference being the character Dai (代). Under this theory I ran a Google search on "BSゼルダの伝説古の石盤" and lo and behold, the Berriblue blog and one other site both refer to it by this name. It's not a perfect explanation, but I for one feel comfortable letting it go at that."

I myself go by the theory that the game should be romanized based on how it's pronounced, because while Japan can be confusing with it's writing, it's pronunciation doesn't change that much.

(BTW, "BS Zelda REMIX" doesn't really exist as a Satellaview broadcast - it was a misnaming for the MAP 1 Dai-3-wa ROM which has since taken on a life of it's own.)

On "BS Tantei Club".

The proper title for the game is BS 探偵倶楽部雪に消えた過去 (BS Tantei Kurabu Yuki ni Kieta Kako)

Some ROM download sites refer to it as "BS Tantei Club Saihousou" or something like that. I do not know where this name came from. Any help figuring that out would be helpful.

On the "BS" Prefix.

Although ROM sites will put the "BS" prefix in front of every game title, whether or not they were on the actual game title is much less consistent.
For example, "BS F-Zero Grand Prix", and "BS Super Mario USA" both have the "BS" prefix - note how they're both special soundlink versions of a standard release... but there's no "BS" in "Tamori's Picross", "All Japan Super Bombliss Cup 95", or "Kodomo Chousadan Mighty Pockets", or most "plain" SFC rereleases.
This can be a bit of confusion in and of itself.

Recently on this BS Zelda thread we've been trying to figure out info on the prizes St. Giga distributed as rewards for Satellaview players. I decided to put up some of the info here as well for reference.

Most the information comes from the Satellaview History Museum, SFC MANIA, and Satellaview Heaven which I linked on the right.

From what I read, a lot of the games had certificates of victory for the high-scoring players. I haven't seen any of them with my own eyes but the SFC MANIA article on BS Fuurai no Shiren seems to have a low-res picture of it's specific one. These are likely highly collectible.

On the note of non-certificate prizes, Calling cards were common. For those who don't remember the days before the cell phone boom, calling cards were cards that were used to pay for phone calls. Satellaview Heaven has up a picture of a BS Shin Onigashima one, and on Yahoo Japan Auctions I saw descriptors for a Satellaview Tsushin calling card and a Samurai Spirits calling card.

St. Giga also gave out a lot of self-branded items. A watch and a purse were featured on Satellaview Heaven and descriptions of a purse were noted. The "Pin Badge" is also likely such.

Other than that, though, I am uncertain of what the others would be... either way, these prizes seem like little trinkets produced on the cheap. No trips to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, sorry.

First off, on Yahoo Japan Auctions (last I saw it) is a Satellaview Tsushin Parka. Anyone wanna buy it for me? ;)
But besides that, Madhatter's been translating the list of news articles from "Ge-mu Toranoana" (I'll need to update the articles I have that previously referenced this for the proper name - it's apparently based on Comic Toranoana.) listings on Kameb's Satellaview History Museum.

Along with what I mentioned, he's noted some of the more interesting items that were being given - apparently Golden Mario Statues, the imfamous Nintendo collectible prize, were distributed at some point - likely for BS Super Mario USA.
Game Paks were also distributed - nothing too collectible mind you, but Super Mario RPG and Kirby Super Deluxe were good games, don't you think? Already the prizes sounds a lot more interesting.

Koi ha Balance - Battle of Lovers

Squaresoft seemed to like treating the Satellaview like a little playground. Games like Treasure Conflix and Dynamitracer seemed to throw around a different atmosphere than their typical "Final Fantasy" work.

And then this came along and pushed it a bit over the edge.

Koi Ha Balance - Battle of Lovers is a board game. Yes, a board game.
It's about scoring with lots of girls. Literally (although not sexually).
It goes hilariously over the top in nearly everything it does.

This gameplay video I put up (recorded off emulating. Yes I am a cheap butt) shows only a fraction of gameplay, and already you see things like men emoing over being single, battles with muscle-bound homosexual stereotypes, and men stealing other guys' girls by the ultimate superpower of materialism!

Excuse the long absence. This time, an actual crisis came up. I'm not gonna babble my personal stories here though. Instead, I shall thank MadHatter at the BS Zelda forum for picking up my pace in researching. I'm gonna have a few interesting articles to put up now. Let me start with this one.

For a while now I've been trying to nab old documents on the Satellaview - thanks to Madhatter I actually have some excellent little articles. I unfortunately am not the Master of French, but I can already see some news. :D

A few weeks ago I've tried making a go at ripping music from Satellaview ROM SPCs looking for some songs that aren't going around in common sets.

A few notes to the other SPC rippers out there - these are my first real attempts at ripping these, so I'm sorry if there's any grave errors.
for the ones in which I just have the name of the ROM.spc, those songs are the only songs I could access. Most of the song names for ROMs with more than one song were made up based on some text that was on the page along with the music.

(EDIT: I've had a problem with these MP3s sounding weird on the embed, but not on Winamp. Therefore I'm direct-linking the Mp3s on top of the embeds, in case other people also have this problem.)

Sometimes I search diligently for things that I just can't seem to obtain. Other times I miss something obvious that's been trying to fly into my face like a Danmaku Bullet.

This is the case of the latter. I should've thrown this in with the rest of the slotted cart games, but alas, I've been looking for the BS F-Zero 2 Dai-2 stuff that I've faild. (Bonus points for anyone who gets "faild")

So yeah, the thing I forgot about was Joushou Mahjong Tenpai. Now, since this is a mediocre Mahjong game, I'd guess to a Westerner like myself I shouldn't be expected to really thinkg for this game. But alas, I'm a perfectionist who is obsessed with completion.

So, to start off with, Square-Enix still has a page up for this game. How interesting! I should see if Dynamitracer, Treasure Conflix and Koi Ha Balance are here as well.

The game was credited to Game Arts (highly prestige-filled devvers to make the least of it. BTW, I'm totally psyched for that new TMNT Game being made by them and Team Ninja. Yes I go off topic a lot on this post.) and published by Enix.

It's difficult to get a good picture of the game's cartridge scan. I had to dig around Yahoo Japan Auctions to find this picture

And as for in-game screenshots I'll leave this link. Yes. It's a ridiculously plain Mahjong game. No wacky Mario Party cheating or Anime Girl stripping to distract you. and here I was kinda hoping that dragon on the box art would burninate the loser. But enough being corny out of me.

As the cartridge top suggests, this had some level of Satellaview compatibility - exactly what, I dunno. Data packs are likely but this is one of the few where I don't recall Data Packs for the game being mentioned in any undumped lists or schedules. Kinda confusing. (Any help on this, native Japanese folks? *sad puppy eyes* )

One notable thing I tried to do loading the game is open the second option (going down from the top-left, as opposed to the second one going right from the top-left), only to get a screen that looks like a message that forces me back to the previous menu. I wonder....

I decided to try out the newest BSNES version and seeing some different behavior in the Derby Stallion 96 ROM inspired me to write this article - one with a bunch of pictures of things that can go wrong. :E

Before I get into the fun parts though, allow me to explain what I mean - on Derby Stallion 96, the menu has an option at the bottom called, what else? "Satellaview", in it's JP form.

Before, the old BSNES (And SNESGT which I took the screencap of) gave me this error when I would select it:

Now what happens?

What is this? Did we restore it?

...

Oh blast it! It's another error!

Error 05? I wonder what this means?

I'm not done yet, though. :3 The BS-X Bios has a few more errors I can throw down on here as well.

Error 08 happens apparently on emulators that can't quite do the Satellaview

And Error 09 is the dreaded message that appears if the BS-X thinks your memory pack ROM data has corrupted.

"This seems like a sort of little demo in comparison to the NP Version. Before you ask - these are the only characters, settings, and battle map I could select. There's also a lot of missing polishes compared to the NP Version - I can't seem to enable Battle and Fort Seizing animations for example."

BS Fire Emblem Script Translation Project.

I've decided I shall make videos of myself going through the Satellaview's "books", which apparently come in a ridiculous amount of varieties.

For anyone who's out of the loop here - quite an amount of the Satellaview ROMs going around are not "games" per se. Rather they are nicely-arranged rows of text and pictures, sometimes with music, for your pleasure.

To show you what I mean, I'm linking another Youtube video I found. Unfortunately I can't embed it, but considering... yeah, that's probably for the best anyway.

This one is an issue of "Nintendo HP". Nintendo HP apparently had news on all of Nintendo's latest stuff, from the N64 to the Super Famicom's "Nintendo Power" service.

Some of the ones I want to look at here are "Sousa Sentai Wappers", "Bdash" and "Busters Digital Magazine". There's a lot more too. Once I get a desktop camera working, stay tuned. :3

When making a blog like this, sometimes new finds are difficult to come by. Or at least at a reportable form.

I'll leave this space as a sort of guideline for what I should be expecting of myself (and therefore what's expected to come from Satellablog) later on.

In terms of material I archived? I could put up some more videos of the downloadable games. DynamiTracer's ending was put up on NicoNicoDouga after all. Any requests? I'm running out of Soundlink program videos though. If only I could find R no Shosai's...

One idea I might have is to translate the Satellaview-related articles at SFC MANIA and SATELLAVIEW HEAVEN. That way, you can get some interesting reads on BS Wario no Mori, Pikopiko Pairetsu, SatellaQ, and BS Sim City, among others.

I also need to try to tidy the blog articles up - revise/remoxe some Tags, particularly. I got an excess amount of F-Zero and Zelda ones, and a lot of silly ones.

Last but not least, I haven't gone through my archived radio programs yet. I didn't figure those to be very popular, though.

You won't like it when eBayers pricegouge your own hard work for personal profit, either.

A enigmatic BS Zelda "PAL Cartridge", eh?

And hardly even -days- after Con released the "Real Hardware" hack project out.

Can we put two and two together here? Ah, yes. Yes we can.

For reference, I spent many days bug-testing these ROMs on my Super UFO ROM copier.
Yeah, quite a volunteering, wasn't it?
I would have liked to believe that this would not have been the first sight I'd see of a "repro cart" - all my hard work and I don't even get my own? I didn't even get to hear "YEAH THIS WORKS ON PAL BTW CAN I SELL IT?" from this guy.

That's to say nothing about how this is already approaching more money than A repro of NWC 1990, the "most collectible" Nintendo game - and it likely won't be spent in the least on more Satellaview research that would be sent to the public.

I don't particularly like being dismissive, but, hey, I've petitioned hundreds of people to donate to Matthew Callis to get more Satellaview ROMs going around and no one gave a dime - so why should someone who slapped a ROM hack onto a PAL cartridge get more money in one eBay auction than I got in a year of working on this blog?

I did a search for 穴井夕子 (Remember that name? I brought it up earlier on here.) on NicoNicoDouga today and got a mildly pleasant surprise. Before I elaborate you, you guys need to understand what makes it so interesting. And to do that, I'd have to show you something else first...

This is "All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros" for the Famicom Disk System. The story behind it is that All Night Nippon themselves raffled it off to contest winners in 1986.

So how doe this relate to what I found? Simply, really...

An episode with the date 91/07/02.

I tried going back down NicoNicoDouga's archive to trace the oldest recording of this - it seems they only have down to 1988. Since I hear the ANNSMB was given out in 86, that means I need to figure out how to dig deeper into this.

Since I found these looking up someone I already identified as a Satellaview radio personality, it makes me curious about Nintendo's past relationships with what many foreigners may see as obscure Japanese 80's Pop Culture - and how it affected the decision to churn out the Satellaview itself.

Digging into the history of Satellaview emulation and ROM dumping.

Figured I'd make a post about this to fill up some time.

I've been trying to research into the history of the Satellaview ROM dumping and emulation scene - in particular the very nature of the first Satellaview ROM dumps.

The most notable hint I got comes from This Post at LostLevels. apparently Pachuka, a maintainer of the old site emucult, thieved the ROMs from "Hoarders" a long time ago.

For reference, understanding that the most popular Sonic the Hedgehog 2 prototype, widespread among the internet now, was literally stolen from a videogame expo, I've gotten used -and numb - to this. Anyway, I've been unable to ascertain what exactly these ROMs were, but flash forward to now and we have ROMs being dumped by the likes of no-intro members and such.

Hopefully at some point I can make a good DAT documenting the ROM dumpers of certain games. Assuming they don't want anonymity.

PS. While I can't say for certainty whether everything Pach did was wrong, I will say that he really should've tried to understand what he was taking when he got these Satellaview ROMs - Being in contact with him quite a bit gives me the impression he really hardly knows much about the very games he allegedly stole. :(
Hopefully I can at least prevent something like that.

A little bit of background; the shrine has lately decided to try looking for an elusive FDS version of the Legend of Zelda named ゼルダの伝説　チャルメラバージョン ("CHARUMERA RAMEN Zelda no Densetsu") or as such.

I just noted something weird about BS F-Zero's music.

As I've noted earlier, "MUTE CITY" and "RED CANYON" are taken from "SUPER FAMICOM GAME MUSIC". Up until a few nights ago, I had no idea where the other mixes came from.

I mean, yeah, sure, there was that Jazz arrange, but that's Jazz, right? The BS F-Zero stuff sounds electronic, not jazz!

.... wait a moment, Youtube! What kind of trickery is this.

1:27 or so in this video. That's the Jazz version of Silence? Wait a moment....

The melody sounds identical to the BS F-Zero's electronic version! For this track in particular, this is strange because the Jazz arrange of Silence sounds nothing like the original SNES Version - it's like a completely different song altogether.

So what you get with BS F-Zero is a jazz song played with electronic instruments?... what?

But also! Silence was not the only track like this! Big Blue, Death Wind and White Land are also as such! Peculiar! And the main opening theme, while altered much moreso, still resembles the Jazz version more than the original version.

That just leaves me with Port Town and Fire Field, then...? Port Town's music, I have still not identified, and I didn't check Fire Field's song yet, so I'm not certain on that...

I ponder if there's any way I could alter this music myself... hrm...

Right, King League should be popping up soon.

The Kirby no Omachahako games were - well, essentially, a bunch of minigames. They were very basic stuff, too. Being highly simplistic as they are, they make no unique use of the Satellaview hardware.

Funky Satellaview downloads: Kaizo Choujin Schbibinman Zero

This bit of a filler article is to describe one of the more cool Satellaview games.

Kaizo Choujin Schbibinman Zero is a sort of platformer/beat-em-up hybrid which makes use of every Japanese Toku television cliche in the book - and is a lot of fun in part for doing so.

It was presented as a normal download rather than a Soundlink - so no time limits and no Satellaview-specific options like turning the radio on or reading the BS-X data.

It's easy to pick up and play, even for a casual gamer. The challenge comes from trying to get an absurdly high score in the end - trying to reach number 1 must've been something for the Satellaview hardcore to try to obtain a prize from.

You punch, kick, and throw special attacks at the putty-patrol-like enemies going left to right or down-to-up or whatever until you reach the boss, then you pound the boss hard.

The game is apparently a part of the "Kaizo Choujin Schbibinman" series which was previously on the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16. Hardcore Gaming 101 has a good read on the series as a whole (but... Banta Satellite? Where did THAT come from?)

For your viewing pleasure, I have obtained from the depths of ~~hell~~ Dailymotion a TAS of the game which seems to completely ruin the fun of it.

BSNES did an update while I wasn't looking (not that I look that often anyway..)

Satellaview ROMs now cause an auto-prompt for a BIOs cart to appear - this replaces the old "Load Special" option from the old versions, and renders my old guide obsolete. On the other hand, now it's likely easier to figure out than it was before - just load your ROM and then pick the BIOs when prompted.

Slotted carts work in a reverse manner - pick the main cartridge first, and then pick the Data Cart that goes with it when prompted.

Checking my e-mail linked to this blog (for a change) made me realize I had a certain comment. It inspired me to finally get these videos up.

These are the videos merely called "BS F-ZERO GRAND PRIX". They seem to be a different format from the ones I posted earlier that were called "BS F-ZERO GRAND PRIX 2".

Not that that makes things any less confusing for me.

Here you start out on the normal F-Zero courses. The music is also some nice F-Zero electronic arrangements.

These recordings seem to cut around a bit, sadly. Fuller recordings woudl be appreciated.

At the climax is a "Bonus" course - these bonus courses would then be compiled into the BS F-ZERO 2 Download ROM.

Tonight I've decided to try using excite to translate them. Here's some results. In the meantime, I will describe each site's contents.

SFC MANIA - This blog has some neat pictures of Satellaview games, as well as links to zoome videos of BS Kirby on Omachahako. These videos are great to watch, as they show more of the simple Kirby games.

SATELLAVIEW HISTORY MUSEUM - A website which has a list of the Satellaview's "Soundlink" broadcasts as well as schedules for a lot of the months the Satellaview was functioning.

SATELLAVIEW HEAVEN - Another blog. This has info on games like BS Simcity and SatellaQ, and it has pictures of Satellaview merchandise; likely, prizes from the game contests.

This Yahoo Auction is for an episode of "Tamori's Picross", from the premiere date of airing in 1995.

I can't get much info on it, except for what's at Jupiter Corp's website. As far as I know, it is a rare find.

Sega Channel - VG [Adjective Noun] Part [Number]

I realized I lack a consistent name for any of these tangents, so I'll just play with that for the title names. woo.

The Sega Channel is one of the few services here I actually have a mild personal experience on - at a festival in Doylestown around [95 or 96, not sure], there was an actual Sega Genesis Kiosk running the service. I got to play The Punisher on it. It was rad. Unfortunately since didn't -live- in Doylestown at the time, I could not subscribe to the service.

The Sega Channel is the most similar to the Satellaview of all these other services (and may in fact be part of the inspiration for this site). "Broadcasts" were temporarily stored in your Sega Channel BIOS cart, which you used to download games, news, and cheats. No special audio enhancements, but it was still pretty sweet looking.

When the service died, so too did access to the NTSC-U versions. A few of them, like Alien soldier and Golden Axe 3, have now got Virtual Console releases. Hopefully those will pave the way for the previous two mentioned above.

Sega Meganet, Mega ANSER, and the Mega Modem - VG Network experiements part 3

Alright, this next one is on the Mega Modem. If any of you remember hearing about the "Telegenesis" and wondering what it was and where it went, this is it's story. Be warned: You might hear some of the most atrocious music ever.

First off, this this wikipedia article has a basic description. Also check out this one on The Sonic Retro Wiki.

Note that while it had netplay functions, only games specially designed could be used as such. And as far as I heard, only two were.

Also, most of those games had to be downloaded -onto- the Mega Modem. And assumedly these downloads did not last. This is why the games for the Mega Modem used to be difficult to find if they were not ported elsewhere.

So, what games were available? I'll start with a MegaDrive Sonic game so obscure it was the only one not put on the Gamecube's Sonic Mega Collection. Watch out for the music, though...

Sonic Eraser would probably have been an awesome title if they changed the soundtrack and extended the gameplay a bit. But alas. Instead of such, it lived and died on the Megamodem, not being noted until nearly a decade later. (Long story about how it's ROM was found.)

XBAND - VG Network experiment part 2

Before I start this one, I'd like to note that someone pointed out to me that apparently in the previous video, an explicit reference to Windows Vista is made. (What the Devil?) I do not know the implications of such. However, I'll keep my faith and assume for now it's either a sort of recreation, or that the service in fact is still running today.

Either way, I'm moving on. Next stop, XBAND.

Actually, I assume a lot of the more hardcore gamers actually remember XBAND, as this is one that was born, raised and died in the USA.

It's notable for it's netplay options, which let you play games against faraway friends with your dial-up modem.

Figuring I need -some- content on this site now, I've decided to make a few articles pertaining to a more broad history of networking in videogames. Click "Read More" to see the first. In the meantime, since I'm signed in, I might be trying to fix some of the video URLs, but don't expect much action there today.

My first article will be on the ファミコン通信アダプタセット
and before you ask, that's the "Famicom Communication Adapter Set". More commonly known here as the Famicom Modem.

Yes. With the "mighty" speed of dial-up, you could send your Famicom to the internet. What was this used for?

Well, it seems Nintendo's trend of using online for something that was -not- a netlinked online game started here. Nope, you could -not- play 2-player Contra with a faraway friend or anything cool like that. Rather, the set was aimed at a more "casual" audience, and the carts produced for it were mostly things older people did, like Stock trading and banking.

If you do some searches online, you may not really be able to find much on this. This is where I jump in with my obsessive-Google-searching and NicoNicoDouga-searching.

With my powers combined with those of some other obsessives, I now present to you what is likely the only working footage of a Famicom modem-compatible game I'll ever find; JRA-PAT.

Can anyone say NO GRAPHICS, TEXT ONLY, FINAL DESTINATION? The Youtube description of the video has the original NicoNicoDouga URL, BTW.

While I heard from most articles that this did not really catch on, apparently that may not be -quite- the case, as JRA-PAT also has a Super Famicom Version.

Emulating the Satellaview - some new ROMs need BSNES!

Right, as I brought up in my previous post, for some reason BS Konae-chan no DokiDoki Penguin Kazoku only boots on BSNES. Now, since it needs the BIOS, loading it is a bit more complex than just "Pop open ROM" now...

So, time to check out the not-so-enclosed instruction book! Click the ol' "Read More" button.

Anyway, first off, BSNES is here.

Now, before we do anything of note, let me get something put in your mind here right away.

BSNES will not load the BS-X bios if said BIOs has a ROM header. You will need to remove it if your bios has it. The BS-X Bios on our site has such a header, so it will need to be removed before going any further. Various ROM hacking guides should have ROM header removal tutorials, or you can use SNEStool or Ucon64 or whatever is your preference for such.

Now, AFTER this header has been removed, open the BSNES app.

On "file" you will see a "Load Special" option which has a submenu.

"Load BS-X Cartridge" is for loading a download game in conjunction with the BS-X Bios.

Put your bios on the top and the ROM on the bottom. Click "Load" and you'll kick into the BS-X Bios itself. I'll tell more on what to do after this after a bit, but it should be easy from here on out - when you go to the overworld, enter the house behind you, hit the first options, and there! Game loaded.

Elude Visibility has put up the ROM for this funky, obscure Nintendo arcade-style game which was only released on the Satellaview.

I've posted a bit of a teaser video of it before to try to hype it. Also here is a bit of a gameplay video (Note: The music is not from the ROM. Sorry, was a bit sloppy on the camerawork.)

The goal of the game is to get a high score by collecting the penguins (And not losing any in the hazards along the way) in this strange mix of Frogger and Lemmings.

As noted, the ROM only boots on BSNES. This has just made me realize that I need to put instructions on how to boot the ROM up. That shall be in the next update.

Huh? Did I say I was gonna put up something different last week? Well, uh... that's for tomorrow! I swear!...

Really though, something's come up that I think shall allow me to hype it with these videos.

You might know this game under the Nintendo DS version "Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer", which was the first version to have an English localization. However, it originally appeared on the Super Famicom - and has a Satellaview version.

This is Week 1. The gameplay should look familiar if you've played either the above mentioned game, or other "Mystery Dungeon" games. Particularly Dragon Quest Yangus, the Nightmare of Druaga, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

I'm sure a few of you have noted my links, right?

I've been digging into the Satellaview History Museum And I saw on there a schedule showing a lot of game titles, I decided to look a few of them up, and it turns out a decent amount match a lot of common Super Famicom releases. I will post some videos of some specific ones here.

Note that these probably aren't from the Satellaview-downloaded versions - I'm just going with gut instinct in believing these specific ones are the same as they are on cartridges. These ones I downloaded are apparently Tool-Assisted Speedruns.

Google translates the name of the program as "Mysterious Phone Calls". I've heard from some translators I work with that the actual meaning implies that it's a prank phone call show, but it seems quite a bit more rnadom in that.

In particular, a segment of the show is apparently a skit called "Dragon Quest IX". Wait, isn't that gonna be on the DS soon? Wow, how time flies....

I'm gonna link to Unseen64 now on an article I found there of interest:

Apparently there was confusion over this SFC Zelda 2 Tech Demo screenshot, with people saying it may have been intended for the Satellaview. Needless to say, that article should explain - it was not. Rather sad, really... I am a bit of a Zelda 2 fan. Notably, the magazine scan is from 1988, and the protagonist is not the Satellaview mascot - this should've reasonably thrown some buzzers into my head about it, but I didn't want to have outright deny anything blindly.

I doubt anything came of the SFC Zelda 2. :(

An interesting note about the old "Famicom Tsushin" Magazine, though, is that it seems related to "Satellaview Tsushin".... perhaps the latter being a spinoff of the former.

NicoNicoDouga recently got up a new bit of Satellaview radio programming. I figured I'd put it up here, along with a little something else I found that's related to it.

A frequent recurring radio host on the Satellaview's "Super Famicom Hour" was called the "Game Tiger". I'm not quite sure who or what that's meant to be, but the show features a lot of discussion.

This one, apparently a "Special", makes frequent references to the Nintendo 64. When you think about it, it must be sad for these guys to have to advertise the console that was meant to usurp them. Well, at least the Satellaview lasted longer than Randnet did.

Also, a little bonus! The Starfox song in the beginning? I think it sounds fairly much like this:

As you may have noted before, I usually tried to put a video of a broadcast up every weekend.

As of today, I'm a day off. :(

Rather stupid of me, eh? Aw, well. Hopefully to make up for it, I'll have more material this week!

Let me get out a bit on BS Marvelous.

There were two BS Marvelous "games" on the Satellaview; Time Athletics Course and Camp Arnold Course. There's apparently also a standard Super Famicom version of Marvelous.

The game seems to has the engine and some gameplay bits taken obviously from Zelda: A Link to the Past. However, it's themes seem to resemble more down-to-earth, Boy Scouts-esque survival, environmental interactions and the like.

As I'm not quite sure which one came first yet, I'll start with Camp Arnold.

I am finally posting up some descriptions of download games again. I don't do these often except for games which aren't dumped yet, but I feel the Squaresoft titles deserve some attention.

Many people seem to forget that Square did something other than Radical Dreamers on the Satellaview. In fact, they did quite a lot of titles! I will post some videos, like the usual!

Note that none of these are broadcasts, so no Soundlink stuff in this subject.

First, some footage from DynamiTracer. This peculiar title seems like a bizarre cross between Square's usual work and... Sega's Toejam and Earl. I will post two videos I have:

How to emulate the Satellaview: Data Cart goes in game!

This next quickie of a guide will be for Satellaview "Data Carts". Or, Memory Packs which have data intended as an expansion to a retail cartridge.

I posted a bit about those earlier, remember? Anyway.

the emulator I will use here is BSNES. This is the only emulator that I recall working for this. Unfortunately, it does not seem to boot SD Gundam G-Next, so I can't test that... Therefore, my ginuea pig here will be Same Game.

First, get BSNES here;

BSNES page.

And whatever ROMs you may be working with. One note, though; you may need to remove ROM dump headers, which are basically padding at the first 200 bytes of certain ROMs. Most popular SNES ROM hacking tools can do this easily, but I won't recommend any one in particular here.

Open up the emulator;

And on these options, select "Load BS-X Slotted Cartridge".

In this specific case, I have a good "Same Game" Japanese ROM at the top, and a "Same Game Koma Data - Tengai Makyo" ROM at the bottom. Just hit the "LOAD" button and....

Hey, something seems different here! You should know what I mean if you've played Same Game before without the data cart.

How to use Satellaview emulation; for Broadcast games.

I'm writing this one down in light of the fact that many people may not know how to properly emulate Satellaview content. In particular, Broadcast games have difficulty running.

The standard emulators of choice for many people - SNES9X and ZSNES - are not necessarily the optimal choice for Satellaview emulation. In fact, I do not know how to boot many of the ROMs on them properly. Therefore, I use alternative emulators.

The easiest option to use is apparently a modification of SNES9X called "SNES9X SE". It was written in part for improved Satellaview support.

SNES9X SE

Most ROMs will boot on it, although emulation is not perfected. It is the easiest to use because it can fake Bios emulation, so you do not need the Bios ROM and setup is easier than the others.

My personal preference, however, is SNESGT. It's homepage is here;

This requires a bit of work to get working. I have written a tutorial here;

Compatibility is more or less the same as SNES9XSE, but there's less notable glitches on SNESGT, and the ability to modify the game's real-time clock as you wish is a great touch that'll let you go quicklly to segments of a game you may wish to re-view.

Before loading a BS-X ROM, you go to Options - > Settings. It should pop up a settings screen. Look to the left of it.

There, click on "BS" and you'll see this menu. This is specifically for BS-X games.

The most important things to do here are to check "Use BSX-ROM" and have a BS-X BIOs linked to in the "BSX-ROM file". The BS-X BIOs can be found a various BIOS-hosting sites and the BS Zelda Shrine, likely under the name "BS-X BIOS" or "SATELLAVIEW BIOS". If this BIOs does not work for you, you may have to remove it's ROM header, but since I do not know if it's necessary for SNESGT (it -IS- for BSNES), I'll wait for my BSNES ROM load tutorial for more on that. Another possibility is that your ROM may still be in compressed formats like .zip - find an extractor to get the .SMC or .SFC file within.

The other settings are to customize your experience. Out of preference, set the clock to the beginning of the hour, so that you see the entirety of the game's Live Broadcast. 7 minutes in may work for BS Zelda, but for BS Tantei Club and BS F-Zero, segments will be skipped.

"Boot from BS-X ROM" is for Download games and Magazines, as opposed to Live broadcast games. Note that some download games will not boot in this mode, and need to play without it.

"Save BSX Sram separately" makes individual sram saves for each BS-X game, as opposed to lumping them in a single file. For episodic live broadcast games, you might want this UN-checked so that data can more seamlessly transfer over.

After all these settings are configured, load a BS-X ROM as if it was a standard ROM file, and it should boot. Double check these instructions if it doesn't. If you still have questions, ask me them here, and I'll consider them when revising this.

My next article on emulation will likely be about Data Expansions. It will use BSNES.

I apologize about not having a single update for nearly a week in a row. This time, though, it's because I've been doing some serious researching, and have been learning a lot more. I will hopefully be a bit more active, um... today! Yeah, I shall probably post a couple new articles.

But let me start with this - BS Zelda, Map 1, Week 3. This is the week we have the ROM dump of, guys. :)

In this video, the boy who could not complete his objectives last week has to backtrack this week to get the Triforce piece he missed, and then go clear the objective of getting the other two Triforce pieces. Sounds daunting, does it not? Actually, from what I've seen, Satellaview games seem to be toned down in difficulty compared to other games...

But either way, here we go.

Only one more to go for BS Zelda! I will then cross-link both this and the Sekiban weeks for you guys.

The only words I can put to describe this are; Fear Birdo. DREAD Birdo. Birdo is scary.

This is week 1 of BS Super Mario USA, in embedded cruddy VHS video format. As usual, NicoNicoDouga's the best I got for a source name, although it seems someone is helping me with finding names. Does anyone here know a tokkys? tokkys is a name referenced iwth the BS-X videos often, it seems...

but whoops, I'm drifting here! Multi-track drifting in fact! Time to cut to the chase.

Welcome back to Subcon! Apparently, it was more than just a dream, and Wart isn't very happy about that! So he's... stolen all the Mario Statues.... Yeah. Such a diabolical plan he's got there. Note the sarcasm. -_-;

Anyway, Mario and the gang have paled up with the King of Subcon to nab the statues back and beat Wart, multiple times over!

Note the Japanese voice actors. very peculiar choices. Mario matches the voice seen in Super Famicom adverts. Toad sounds the most like any current incarnation, but lacks the sore throat. Peach sounds... well, geez, she sounds like your mom! A rather peculiar VA choice.

Then you got the diabolical group on the other side - the Mario USA bosses. Mouser sounds like a punky teenager, Clawgrip likes speaking Engrish, FryGuy sounds like an old karate master... actually fairly badass, I might say.

... but then we get to Birdo. Ah, remember the old tales of Birdo being a guy, wanting to be a girl? Well, in this particular incarnation of Super Mario USA, the joke is more alive than it ever was or ever will be! Birdo sounds like the most stereotypical homosexual you can ever imagine, and what's worse? Along with the pink Birdo, there's the green and red Birdo, making a TRIO of stereotypical "gaybirds" mocking you while you try to clear these goals!

... oh, right! Excuse my ranting, here's the rest of it!

Choco took a lot of effort into making these BS Zelda: Inishie no Sekiban transcripts, based off the videos from NicoNicoDouga. Berri has been working on translating them for a while - The BS Zelda Shrine may have all of Week 1 ready by now.

Also, in the JP website searching I've been doing, I apparently saw that some videos used to exist on NicoNicoDouga that, well, don't seem to be there. I'm taking some crazy measures to try to obtain them, but nothing's gotten results yet, so I'll leave my request archived here in the off chance that all it takes is time...

I posted a piece of music from this earlier, so I might as well bring this up now... excuse my lack of any organization.

Anyway, I'm sure a few of you have heard of "BS F-Zero 2". It was a Satellaview download, was it?... well, actually, it seems to also be multiple Satellaview Live Broadcast games, as well.

This actually confused me for a while - still does, honestly. There's no ROM dumps of the Live Broadcast versions, and it seems most of the internet forgot about it's existence. But then these vids got uploaded on NicoNicoDouga...

After an introduction to the hosts of the program, you get to practice, and then race, on "Forest 1". Wait, what's Forest 1? This track is not in any other game that I recall! And... there's no healing panels? Crazy! Imagine that in F-Zero X or GX!

And the music... what? "Highway Star"? The music played is the kind of stuff that people now try to S-Rank in Rock Band! In a way, fitting... but not expected.

Unfortunately, so far only this one week is up. I'd love to see week 2. (Looking up old JP sites describe a "METAL FORT" track... could that be what week 2 has?)

Joke of a name aside, it's time for another piece of radio programming taken from the fine yet a-bit-too-anonymous folks at NicoNicoDouga. Alas, some names would help here...?

Yes, it's not much more than J-Pop music, but it's a neat listen into what was popular at the time the Satellaview was around, and what kind of audience was expected to shell out the cash for it. Besides, listening to this while doing mood-clashing things in the BS-X World would be entertaining, no?

If you haven't already figured it out by how many times her name is plastered on the video, the J-Pop celeb on here is "Yuki Uchida".

Alright, remember when I posted some music before? Well, now I'm doing it again, but this time it isn't gonna be clean and smooth like before! Watch out!

I'll start off with this one - from Dragon Quest 1/2 Symphonic Suite.

Yeah, so far so good, right?

Now this one is fr-... wait a sec! I didn't find what CD this came from!

See, this is a rip from the video footage that I've found on NicoNicoDouga, from BS F-Zero 2 Dai-1-shuu's downloading sequence. It's sorta not even the full song!... Although the rest of it is mostly just a loop and a proper end, but still! There's also a lot of other BS F-Zero 1 and 2 music I've been looking for, but am unable to find!

And this next one?

BS Tantei Club's credits sequence... it seems like most of it's music was made entirely for the Satellaview version. I can't find any other clean versions. :(

Back in January, a piece of video from "BS Super Mario Collection" appeared. I was excited when I saw it.

relatively bizarre, don't you think? First it looks like Mario 3, then it kicks into Mario 1 levels!

... I eagerly awaited for more videos, but it's been a few months now, and nothing's come up. :(

It's come to my attention that NicoNicoDouga's been deleting some BS-X videos. Why? Well, I'm not the master of knowledge. :( But I do know that some of that stuff is good to look at!

Of particular note, BS Tantei Club, Week 1... vanished without a trace. I can't even post the original URL for the video, it'll give you NicoNicoDouga's "Video not found" error.

(EDIT: As of this post, I'm now going back and replacing all my TL;DR with the mere previews of what the posts are. Feel free to click "Read More" to see videos embeds now and in the future, and in some cases, retroactively. :P)

I will, however, post the videos in my stupid embed!

I also have videos of BS Tantei Club that have yet to be deleted from NicoNicoDouga, which I will talk about later, and some videos which used to be on Stage6, a now-defunct video site. Those videos are in DivX format and nearly take up a n entire CD in size each video, so I will not post them here.

Instead, you will get a video that was deleted not just from NicoNicoDouga, but Youtube as well!

This is a video of what seems to be a farewell message from the Satellaview's last day of broadcast. Rather melancholy... :(

Here's some more Zelda. This is week 2 of Inishie no Sekiban. Of note in this video; this is apparently someone different from whom played last time, and, well, he's apparently missed some stuff from the previous week! No worry for him, though, as the thieves at the location of the previous two dungeons got the stuff he needs to progress. (This probably did mess with his score tally, though.)
